Writing a Resume
Many jobs that you will apply for will ask you to fill out an application.
Grocery stores, fast food places and chain stores usually have an application. Sometimes you will even fill it out online. It is a good idea to fill out a practice application that you can bring with you to help you remember dates and addresses.
Remember, it is important to be as neat as possible and spell properly. An application is an opportunity to impress the boss. Make sure it looks good.
Your Own Commercial
Usually, you will need a resume to apply for a job. Think of a resume as your own personal commercial. A prospective employer will read it and decide if there is anything in it that makes them want to call you for an interview.
A resume needs to tell the employer something about you that says why you would be a good worker for them. There are lots of different ways to write a resume, and especially when you are young, it can be hard to know what to put in one.
Creating Your Resume
You can gather the information you will need to prepare your resume using this template (PDF). All you need to do is print the form, and fill it out.
The following sites have resumes you can download and fill out on your computer. If you have never had a job before, a format like this can be a good one. If you have some experience, and maybe a high school diploma or GED, you might try this format. For college graduates or those of you who have special areas of expertise, but not a lot of formal paid job experience, this might be the way to go.
At our Career Center, we also have programs on our computers that you may use to write your own resume. Our staff will help you too.
