Cortland County Health
Department |
ILL/DEAD BIRD REPORT FORM, NEW YORK STATE, Year 2000
The Health Department is taking reports on dead bird
sightings within Cortland County, especially crows, and blue jays. While
the Health Department is interested in collecting information about dead
birds as part of its efforts to understand the West Nile virus, we will not be
picking up every dead bird reported. The Department will only be
collecting a small sample of the bird population. However, we encourage County residents to report all dead bird sightings on this Web site to assist the
department's monitoring efforts. Birds waiting to be picked up should be kept
cold by either: a) Placing a bag of ice on the bird and covering the carcass
with a pail, or b) Placing the bird with ice in a cooler not used for food.
If arrangements are not made for a pick-up, please dispose of the dead bird. While
West Nile virus cannot be spread directly from birds to people, you should
always avoid bare-handed contact when handling dead birds and animals. Use
gloves to put the dead bird in double plastic bags. Then place the bagged
carcass in an outdoor garbage can.
