ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Assists the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds in the supervision of buildings and grounds operation, cleaning and maintenance activities; does related work as required.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This is an important position involving responsibility for assisting in the operation and maintenance of school buildings and grounds.  Positions in this class differ from those in the Head Custodian class in that the scope of duties performed involves considerably greater managerial ability.  Work is performed in accordance with general policy as outlined by the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds.  Considerable leeway for the exercise of independent judgment is allowed.  Immediate supervision may be exercised over the work of custodial, maintenance and grounds keeping personnel.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK:  (Illustrative only)

Assists the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds in the assigning of employees to various cleaning and maintenance tasks and sets up schedules of work;

Inspects and performs painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical and other mechanical maintenance and construction work;

Helps prepare tentative budget estimates for custodial and maintenance activities;

Keeps records and makes reports on building and grounds maintenance;

Inspects and performs the more difficult maintenance and repair work for machinery, equipment and buildings;

Purchases parts and supplies for custodial and maintenance activities;

Assists in directing the maintenance and upkeep of school grounds;

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Good knowledge of modern large scale buildings and grounds operation and maintenance practices; good knowledge of the tools, terminology and practices of one or more of the mechanical or building trades; working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heating and ventilating equipment; ability to inspect the work of building tradesmen; ability to plan and supervise the work of a large number of custodians, tradesmen and other building maintenance employees; mechanical aptitude; dependability; initiative; good physical condition.

 

ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school and four years of experience in building cleaning and maintenance activities.
