DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The work involves the performance of routine clerical and
stenographic duties in maintaining financial accounts and records or assisting
in the performance of difficult and complex phases of the work requiring either
the full time or substantial part-time taking and transcribing of dictation and
operation of a typewriter. Incumbents
usually work under general supervision on routine assignments according to
defined procedures with some leeway for the use of independent judgment in
carrying out the details of the work.
Detailed instructions are provided for new or unusual assignments. The class differs from other classes in the
Account Clerk series by virtue of the limited complexity of the work performed,
degree of supervision received, and the responsibility for taking and transcribing
of dictation and operation of a typewriter.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Takes and
transcribes dictation of letters, memoranda, reports and other materials;
Operates a
typewriter in performing a number of varied account keeping tasks;
May act as
secretary to an official where assignments are limited in scope;
Posts to
journal or ledger accounts from appropriate, expense, invoice, payroll,
receipts, voucher records and other original entry media;
Receives
remittances by mail or in person, verifies amounts, computes interest and penalties, and posts to books of original
entry;
Types
records and reports and checks for clerical accuracy, completeness and proper
extension;
Assists in
verifying and reconciling account balances according to a prescribed procedure;
Types
forms, form letters, transcripts, invoices, vouchers, records, payrolls, titles
searches, judgments, lis pendens
reports, index cards, time cards and similar materials;
Classifies
constantly recurring receipts and expenditures and distributes costs according
to a prescribed code;
May answer
telephone and act as receptionist giving out routine information;
Transcribes
Dictaphone cylinders and/or long hand copy;
Operates computing, calculating, check writing, and other office
machines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A.
Graduation
from high school or possession of a NYS equivalency diploma, including or
supplemented by courses in bookkeeping, stenography and typing; or
B.
One
year of clerical experience primarily involving the maintenance of financial
accounts and records requiring the operation of a typewriter and the taking and
transcribing of dictation.
