AGING
SERVICES WORKER
DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The work involves responsibility for providing program information to senior citizens, assisting them in completing applications for various assistance programs and providing various other service components of the Area Agency on Aging. The work is distinguished from that of Aging Services Specialist in that the incumbent has fewer assessment duties and responsibilities. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Aging Services Coordinator and/or Aging Services Specialist. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Provides information to senior citizens or their representatives concerning a variety of programs for which they may be eligible;
Works directly with senior citizens and their delegates in applying and/or assessing for programs;
Refers senior citizens to other applicable assistance programs and services;
Makes home visits to senior citizens to provide information and/or to assist with applications;
Attends staff training sessions and conferences regarding services provided;
Maintains client information in a computerized database system;
May present informational programs to groups regarding services;
May perform outreach activities to identify individuals in need of services and programs.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the needs, characteristics, and interests of senior citizens especially as they pertain to health, recreation, nutrition, and transportation;
Working knowledge of state and federal agencies and programs providing services or grants to senior citizens;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
Ability to deal effectively with the public;
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs;
Ability to understand and empathize with the needs and concerns of others;
Physical condition commensurate with demands of the
position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS: Either
(a) Graduation from a regionally accredited
college or university or one accredited
by
the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate’s
degree
or higher in human services or related field; or
two (2) years of experience providing services to individuals in a human services field; or
SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS:
(1)
Verifiable
part-time and/or volunteer experience may be prorated toward meeting full-time
experience requirements.
