AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC

 

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

 

This position has responsibility for the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment. This is skilled work involving responsibility for the maintenance and repair, including major repair, of all automotive equipment owned by a school district, town, or municipal department.  Work is performed under general direction with considerable leeway for the use of independent judgment in bringing equipment up to approved standards of safety and operation.  Supervision is exercised over the work of helpers, equipment operators or bus drivers.  In school districts not employing an administrative official with responsibility for supervising the transportation program, an employee in this class assumes responsibility for calling substitute drivers, maintaining transportation records, amending bus routes, and generally coordinating the pupil transportation program.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  (Illustrative only)

 

Performs a variety of repairs to trucks, buses, automobiles, tractors and other machinery and equipment;

Lays out and supervises the work of helpers and any maintenance tasks done by drivers;

Schedules maintenance work to insure proper servicing of vehicles;

Repairs or replaces springs, axles, wheel bearings, transmissions, clutches, brake systems, pumps and carburetors;

Repairs ignition systems, generators, regulators, etc.;

Adjusts steering mechanisms and aligns wheels;

Makes minor welding repairs to bodies and chassis;

Paints bus and truck bodies and repairs interiors including seats and windows;

Maintains records of parts and supplies used and prepares requisitions.

 

WHEN RESPONSIBLE FOR THE TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM:

 

Maintains records and prepares transportation reports;

Instructs bus drivers concerning safety rules and regulations;

Interviews and recommends hiring of new bus drivers;

Arranges for substitute bus drivers and special bus trips;

Makes minor changes in bus routes to meet needs of district;

May drive school bus on substitute basis.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

 

Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the tools and terminology of the trade; demonstrated skill in making repairs to automotive and other mechanical equipment; ability to lay out work for self and others; familiarity with welding techniques; ability to maintain simple records and prepare reports; good motor, hand and eye coordination; good physical condition.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

 Two years of satisfactory experience as a skilled automotive mechanic; or any equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to indicate ability to do the work.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

 

 Must possess the appropriate class NYS driver’s license and meet all 19-A requirements within six months of hire date if driving bus is a responsibility of the position.
