BUS DRIVER ‑
GARAGE ATTENDANT
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This
position performs routine manual work involving responsibility for assisting in
the servicing of school buses and other automotive equipment, and cleaning the
garage. Additionally, the incumbent
drives a bus on an assigned route. Work
is performed under the direct supervision of an Automotive Mechanic when
performing automotive maintenance and general supervision of the School
Transportation Supervisor in all other activities. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Assists
Automotive Mechanics in routine servicing and repairing of buses and
other equipment;
Cleans
and washes district owned vehicles;
Performs
routine building cleaning activities to keep bus garage clean and in
order;
Operates
a bus on a regular schedule or on special occasions;
Informs
passengers of safety practices, enforces established policies
regarding behavior and safety;
Checks
operating conditions of bus and reports defects prior to driving bus;
Maintains
simple records;
May
assist in a variety of building maintenance or repair tasks.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS:
Working knowledge of the
operation of automotive equipment and repair methods; working knowledge of
cleaning methods, materials and equipment; good knowledge of driving safety
practices, traffic laws and regulations; ability to understand and follow
simple oral and written directions; ability to operate a bus under difficult
driving and road conditions; ability to get along with children and command
their respect; dependability; good physical condition.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of an approved course of study in
Automotive
Mechanics at BOCES or an equivalent technical program; OR:
Six months of experience
as a helper or handyman in an automotive repair
shop.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATIONS: Possession of appropriate New York
State Class 2 Motor Vehicle License.
