BUS DRIVER/GARAGE ATTENDANT

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs routine manual work in servicing automotive equipment and in cleaning a garage and operates a school bus; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is routine work involving responsibility for assisting in the servicing of school buses and other automotive equipment, and for the safe transportation of school children on an assigned bus route. Work is performed under close supervision of a Head Bus Driver or other superior in accordance with established policies with some leeway permitted for the exercise of independent judgment. An employee in this class also performs routine cleaning work.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

Operates a bus on a regular schedule or on special occasions;

Checks the operating condition of the bus before starting on a trip;

Reports any operational defect to immediate supervisor;

Informs children about safety practices;

Maintains orderly conduct of children on bus;

May be required to operate a station wagon or other similar vehicle;

Cleans and washes school buses;

Assists School Transportation Supervisor in routine servicing and repairing

of buses and other equipment;

Fills buses with gas and checks oil, water and tires;

puts chains on buses and changes tires;

Cuts grass, plows and shovels snow and keeps garage area clean;

Stores supplies, washes windows, sweeps floors, burns trash and otherwise

keeps garage in order.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of driving safety practices and traffic laws and regulations; good knowledge of the geography of the area served; ability to operate a bus under difficult driving and road conditions; working knowledge of the operation of automotive equipment; willingness to perform routine work in servicing equipment; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; ability to get along well with children and command their respect; mechanical aptitude; mental alertness; mechanical aptitude; dependability; good physical condition.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Eligibility for the appropriate level NYS Driver's License at the time of application. Possession of license at time of appointment.
