                          BUS GARAGE SUPERVISOR

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This is a skilled supervisory position in which the incumbent is responsible for administration, coordination and/or the performance of a wide range of activities pertaining to both the execution of student transportation and the maintenance of the garage and vehicles.  Responsibilities include: establishment of goals and priorities for the department and employees, providing leadership to bus garage personnel, supervision and evaluation of bus drivers, bus mechanic, garage maintenance, etc.; development, implementation and updating of inventory control system and maintenance schedules. The work is performed under the general supervision of the business manager with wide leeway for exercise of independent judgment. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

 

Develops yearly routing of buses for recommendation to the business manager;

Coordinates and implements special transportation connections for students who are under the           supervision of the Committee on Special Education (CSE);

Develops, implements and evaluates inventory control system for parts, supplies and tools;

Supervises bus drivers to assure compliance with school district policies relating to safety, courtesy,           and reporting procedures;

Advises superintendent regarding road conditions as affected by inclement weather;

Recommends acquisition of vehicle parts;

Trains new drivers and gives road tests;

Assigns substitute bus drivers;

Performs routine maintenance and repairs on fleet vehicles;

Maintains maintenance and repair records for all fleet vehicles;

Develops written reports to administration and board regarding departmental activities and objectives;

Resolves complaints regarding bus routing and scheduling, designation of bus stops, transportation           of personnel, and student bus discipline;

Maintains records on storage and disposal of petroleum waste products in compliance with all laws;

Assists in the preparation of the annual transportation budget;

Interviews, evaluates and recommends applicants for open departmental positions;

May perform routine maintenance and repair of a skilled or semi‑skilled nature on garage building;

Inspects vehicles, equipment and bus garage building to insure that safety standards are maintained;

Review and approves time sheets of departmental employees for submission to payroll clerk;

Maintains departmental Right‑to‑Know and HAZCOM material records as required by law.

 

FULL KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS,ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Thorough knowledge of transportation methods as applied to the safe and efficient operation of school vehicles; thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and terminology of the automotive repair trade; good knowledge of the geography of the school district; good knowledge of safety procedures, traffic laws and regulations; good knowledge of public administrative principals and practices including budget maintenance, inventory control and purchasing; skill in the performance of automotive repair and maintenance; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to use microcomputer; ability to prepare and maintain written reports; ability to get along well with others; good judgment; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

A. Graduation from a New York State registered or accredited two‑year college with an Associate's Degree in Business Administration, Engineering Technology, Psychology or a closely related field and one year of demonstrated basic heavy equipment maintenance.

 

B. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four years of full‑time experience as a skilled automotive mechanic two years of which involved administration and the supervision of a large vehicle fleet.

 

C. Any equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated in (A) or (B) above.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

 

A New York State Class II driver's license and a 19A Examiner's Certification within 6 months after appointment and meet any other pertinent driving regulations that may exist within the school district.
