WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The work involves responsibility for every aspect of the operation and
maintenance of a nine million gallon per day wastewater treatment facility with
activated sludge secondary treatment, including the safety program. Supervision
is exercised over operators, trainees, laboratory personnel, maintenance
personnel, and other subordinate employees.
Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Supervises the operation and
maintenance of the plant, including the safety program, to assure the most efficient
and economical use of equipment, supplies, and manpower;
Serves as the Industrial
Pretreatment Coordinator;
Prepares and oversees annual
budget;
Interacts with the EPS and
NYSDEC;
Prepares and reviews bid
specifications for procurement of contractors, supplies and equipment;
Determines process control
strategy and makes necessary adjustments;
Inspects plant and plant machinery;
Supervises the performance of
necessary tasks for control of plant operations;
Reviews, analyzes, and
interprets technical data and laboratory reports regarding plant operations;
Instructs and supervises
operators, trainees, and other subordinate employees;
Supervises the maintenance and repair of machinery;
Maintains records and prepares
periodic reports to federal, state, and local agencies on the operation of the
plant;
Maintains inventory of supplies, chemicals, and equipment;
Performs public education by conducting facility tours or making
speaking appearances;
Performs any activity required for the operation of the plant in the absence of subordinates.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS:
Thorough knowledge of the practices used and equipment required in the
operation and maintenance of a Type 4A Wastewater Treatment Plant with facilities
for chemical precipitation, sludge vacuum filtration, separate sludge digestion;
good knowledge of the principles and applications of physics, chemistry, and
bacteriology as applied to wastewater treatment and disposal; ability to
supervise the operation and repair of pumps, valves, and related mechanical
and electrical equipment; ability to make and interpret routine laboratory and
field tests for control of plant operations; ability to plan and supervise the
work of subordinates; ability to prepare written and oral reports; mechanical
aptitude; alertness and dependability; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a Grade 4A
Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification issued by the New York State
Department of Environmental Conservation at the time of appointment.
