                                                              COMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  The work involves the responsibility for producing various documents using desk top publishing and other software.  The work is performed under the general supervision of the Vice‑principal and/or the Superintendent of Schools, with leeway for independent judgment.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  (Illustrative Only)

Develops, organizes, and distributes district publications;

Assists in all phases of the district's communications program internally and externally in order to promote interest in the schools;

Produces various certificates and awards using appropriate technology;

Works in developing a photo library containing videos and photographs of employees, students, and district events to be used for publication development;

Develops procedures for increasing communications within and among schools and the community;

Prepares news items (i.e., newsletters, brochures, etc.) for distribution.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of publication skills; good knowledge of PAGEMAKER desk top publishing software; good knowledge of word processing and data base manage­ment software; good knowledge of the English language including proper spell­ing, punctuation, and grammatical usage; ability to enter data at an accept­able rate of speed; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relation­ships with others; ability to produce acceptable work under deadline condi­tions; ability to communicate orally and in writing; initiative; resourceful­ness; good judgment; tact and courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

            A.  Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with a Bachelor's Degree;  OR

 

            B.  Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with an Associate's Degree in journalism, communications, or public relations and one (1) year of experience in journalism, public relations, or news media work;  OR

 

            C.  Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equiva­lency diploma and three (3) years of experience in journalism, public relations, or news media work;  OR

 

            D.  An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C).
