CONSERVATION ASSISTANT

 

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This is technical work involving responsibility for assisting the Soil and Water Conservation District Manager in natural resource conservation.  Performs a variety of technical duties related to the establishment of conservation practices concerning land and water on public and private properties.  Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Soil and Water Conservation District Manager.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  (Illustrative only)

Implements water quality and other special grant programs as required by the District Manager;

Presents information/education programs related to natural resource conservation and other public outreach programs as assigned;

Conducts engineering surveys for soil and water conservation practices, reducing and plotting survey notes;

Collects water samples and other water monitoring data;

Compiles resource data and maps, performs field crop scouting, and develops plans supporting the Integrated Crop Management Program;

Implements assigned SWCD programs such as the Seedling Program;

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:   

Good knowledge of agricultural operatives and practices; working knowledge of the principles and practices of natural resources conservation; knowledge and experience in the use of computers and word processing, database, and spreadsheet software; ability to interpret maps, charts, and graphs; ability to compile data and prepare reports; dependability, enthusiasm; time management skills; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Either:

A.                 An Associate Degree or higher from an accredited college in Natural Resource Conservation, Agricultural Technology, Construction Technology, Education, Public Relations, or related field; OR

B.                 Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and college level course work in Natural Resource Conservation, Agricultural Technology, Construction Technology, Education, Public Relations, or related field AND at least one (1) year of related professional experience in natural resource conservation or related field; OR

C.                An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:  Possession of a valid NYS Drivers License.
