DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF
THE CLASS: The work
involves responsibility for the preparation and cooking of meals at the
Cortland Housing Authority. The Cook
will directly prepare all elements of the meals and be responsible for the
ordering of food necessary to prepare the meal. The Cook is also responsible
for ensuring that the kitchen and Community Room is cleaned and restored to its
original condition. Supervision may be
exercised over volunteer helpers. The
Cook is supervised by the Deputy Director or his/her designee of the Housing
Authority.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Prepares
and cooks meals;
May
supervise volunteers or participate in the serving of food;
May
supervise volunteers or participate in the set-up, break-down and clean-up of
the Community Kitchen used for meals;
Checks on
delivered supplies and supervises storage of items;
Appropriate
handling of food items in a commercial kitchen setting.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of approved methods of preparing and cooking
large quantities of food in a commercial kitchen setting; good knowledge of
modern cooking utensils, appliances, and equipment; good knowledge of kitchen
and food sanitation; ability to plan with a view to economy and efficiency in
the use of supplies, equipment, and food; ability to follow recipes and oral
and written direction; good ability to work effectively with others;
initiative; dependability; good physical condition to commensurate with the
demands of the position.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Graduation from high school or possession of
a high school equivalency diploma and the ability to cook for a large group of
people.
