COURT CLERK

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

            Performs clerical work in maintaining court records and assisting judge in trial proceedings. The work involves responsibility for the preparation of a number of legal papers. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Town Justice. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:            (Illustrative only)

Maintains the official court records including dockets, cash books, bail and restitution records;

Prepares and issues legal documents and reports;

Organizes court appearances including pre-trial conferences, adjournments and special court appearances;

Keeps records and prepares reports regarding fines and fees collected;

Acts as bailiff during trial proceedings;

Operates variety of office equipment in connection with the work. Serves as a receptionist and greet clients and/or visitors;

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL

CHARACTERISTICS:

 

Good knowledge of court procedures and legal documents;

Working knowledge of business arithmetic, office terminology and equipment;

Ability to follow oral and written instructions;

Clerical aptitude;

High degree of confidentiality;

Tact and courtesy;

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

 

A)                Graduation from high school or possession of a general equivalency diploma; OR

B)                Four years of full-time paid clerical experience; OR

C)                An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
