CUSTODIAN – MESSENGER

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs routine building cleaning, semi‑skilled maintenance tasks and performs duties of intra‑district messenger; does related work as required.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is routine manual work involving responsibility for the efficient and economical performance of cleaning and maintenance operations for school buildings and equipment.  The work also involves the receipt and delivery of mail within the school district.  Work is performed under the general supervision of a Head Custodian, school prin­ciple, or other superior in accordance with established policies, with some leeway permitted for the exercise of independent judgment.  Supervision may be exercised over the work of Cleaners.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  (Illustrative only)

Sweeps and mops floors and stairs;

Dusts desks, woodwork, furniture and other equipment;

Washes windows, walls, blackboards, sinks, and other futures;

Empties waste baskets, collects and disposes of rubbish;

Clears snow and ice from walks and driveways;

May be required to perform minor groundskeeping tasks such as mowing lawns,  trimming shrubs and gathering leaves;

Operates an oil or coal low pressure heating system including firing and removing ashes;

Checks operation of clocks and bells;

Puts out and takes in traffic signs;

Arranges chairs and tables and other equipment for special use of school building;

Repairs window shades, replaces light bulbs, soap and towels;

Paints rooms and equipment, and assists with minor plumbing, electrical and   carpentry repairs;

Operates a motor vehicle in the receiving, sorting and delivery of mail and small parcels;

Maintains log of mail pick up and delivery activities.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment, and ability to use them efficiently and economically; working knowledge of opera­tion of maintenance of steam boiler equipment; ability to make minor plumb­ing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical repairs and to perform a variety of routine maintenance tasks; ability to operate a motor vehicle; ability to follow oral and written directions; willingness to do custodial and other manual tasks; thoroughness; dependability; good physical condition.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One year of building cleaning or maintenance experi­ence; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Eligibility for a valid New York State operator's li­cense.  Possession of the license at time of appointment.
