DOG CONTROL OFFICER
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this class is responsible
for carrying out the provisions of the Agriculture and Markets law dealing
with seizing, impounding and destroying of stray and dangerous dogs. The work is performed under the general
direction of the Supervisor and Town Board, or Mayor and Village Board with
wide leeway for the exercise of independent judgment in the handling of
individual cases or complaints. An
employee in this class must possess skill in handling dogs and other small
animals and be able to work independently in the field. This is a Public Officer position. A Dog Control Officer does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Seizes and impounds stray and dangerous
dogs;
Destroys unclaimed and dangerous dogs in accordance with provisions of
Law;
Receives complaints from the public
regarding dog nuisances;
Attempts to locate owners of seized
dogs;
Maintains records of work performed and
makes reports;
Issues appearance summons and arrest warrants and participates in court
proceedings, including preparing reports and providing information, testimony,
and evidence;
Enforces quarantine laws and orders
applicable to dogs;
Tranquilizes uncontrollable animals;
Investigates reports of cruelty to
animals;
May assist in taking a dog census.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of laws and regulations dealing with the seizure, impoundment
and destruction of stray and dangerous dogs; good knowledge of local geography;
good knowledge of the methods and procedures for handling dogs and other
domestic animals; working knowledge of the identification features, temperaments,
and characteristics of the various breeds and types of dogs; ability to meet
and deal effectively with the public; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Although this position is in the
exempt class, graduation from high school or possession of a high school
equivalency diploma and one year of work experience involving the handling of
dogs or other small domestic animals is suggested.
