DEPUTY POLICE CHIEF
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE
CLASS:
This is an important
administrative position involving responsibility for assisting the Police Chief
in supervising, directing, and coordinating the work of all units of the Police
Department, including scheduling. The
work is performed under the general direction of the Police Chief in accordance
with the plans, policies, and objectives outlined by the Chief. The work also entails, in a large measure,
responsibility for the quality of performance of the members of the police
force. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Takes charge of the department
in the absence of the Police Chief;
Assists the Police Chief in planning and directing the
activities of the department;
Investigates any complaint or charge of laxity or
misconduct in the performance of duties of any member of the police force;
Assists in planning the distribution of police strength
to assure maximum police coverage;
Has charge of police training and schedules on-going
training for members of the force;
Makes periodic inspections of
the activities and records of the Police Department;
Holds regular staff
conferences;
Assigns tasks to subordinates
and reviews operations;
Prepares reports of police
activities;
May act for and in place of the
Police Chief as assigned.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES,
SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Comprehensive knowledge of
modern principles and practices of police work; thorough knowledge of police
administration; thorough knowledge of New York State Penal Law, Code of
Criminal Procedure, and Vehicle and Traffic Law; good knowledge of scientific
methods of crime detection and criminal identification; ability to lead and
direct the activities of Police Officers; ability to maintain effective public
relations; resourcefulness and sound judgment in emergencies; integrity; tact;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Eight
(8) years of satisfactory law enforcement experience, two (2) of which must
have been in a second-line supervisory capacity.
