DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC WORKS

 

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: 

This is an important administrative position involving responsibility for assisting the Superintendent of Public Works in the overall administration of the department and for supervising all personnel and activities at and under the direction of the Superintendent.  The work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  (Illustrative only)

Acts as Superintendent of Public Works in the absence of the Superintendent of Public Works;

Assists the Superintendent in planning and directing department activities;

Develops and directs methods and procedures in the training of personnel;

Develops and coordinates a system for departmental responses to complaints;

Investigates complaints regarding department personnel and activities, making recommendations and/or implementing corrective measures as required;

Oversees schedule changes;

Schedules maintenance of all department equipment, vehicles, and buildings;

Maintains departmental inventory and responsible for annual report;

Assists the Superintendent regarding annual budget;

Functions as liaison between all department personnel.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of public works;

Thorough knowledge of equipment, materials, tools, terminology, and safety precautions used in public works;

Working knowledge of methods for dealing with public works projects, problems, and issues; demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of others;

Ability to secure the cooperation of subordinates;

Dependability;

Leadership;

Good judgment; tact and courtesy;

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the posi­tion.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

            A.  Graduation from a standard senior high school or GED and six  (6) years of progressively responsible experience in public works construction or maintenance work, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity:  OR

 

            B.  Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in public works construction or maintenance work, four (4) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity:  OR

 

            C.  An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
