ELECTRIC SUPERINTENDENT

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: 

This is important supervisory work involving responsibility for overseeing the erection, maintenance and repair of all overhead and underground electric power lines.  An employee in this class is especially responsible for the safety of line crews in enforcing observance of standard safety precautions of the trade.  Work is performed under the general direction of the Mayor and Village Board with considerable leeway allowed for the use of independent judgment in planning and carrying out detail of the work.  Supervision is exercised over a small number of employees.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:     (Illustrative only)

Supervises and assists in line construction and maintenance such as erection of poles, installation of cross arms, guys, transformers, wire and cable;

Supervise and assist in tree trimming and cutting on power line right-of-way;

Plans and assigns work, and other office work such as requisitions of materials and supplies, keeping inventories of materials and supplies, records of jobs, and job time sheets;

Reads, installs, tests, and maintains electric meters;

Supervises and assists in installation and maintenance of electrical services to homes and businesses;

Supervise and assist in street light installations and maintenance;

Helps other departments with electrical problems.

Schedule work for Department employees and other subordinates as assigned, record keeping of the Street Department, Enforcement of Right to Know, and OSHA requirements.  Confers with the Mayor and Board of Trustees regarding work assignments.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: 

 

Thorough knowledge of the erection, maintenance and repair of high voltage electric power distribution systems and related equipment through knowledge of the principles of electricity; thorough knowledge of standard safety measures of electricity; thorough knowledge of standard safety measures and devices used in handling high voltage electrical circuits; ability to work at considerable heights and under adverse weather conditions; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; familiarity with CPR and first Aid Techniques.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:

A.                 Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma            and one (4) years experience as a lineman on a high voltage electric power distribution system; or 

B.                 Seven (7) years of experience as a lineman on a high voltage electric power distribution system; or 

C.                An equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated in A and B above.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:  Eligibility for the appropriate New York State Drivers License.
