ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN

 

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

 

The work involves responsibility for assisting on engineering projects in the field or office.  The incumbent uses standard engineering techniques and equipment to perform sub-professional engineering work.  Progressively more difficult tasks are assigned as experience is gained.  In addition to engineering activities, employees in this class may on occasion be required to perform manual labor or clerical tasks in connection with the work.  The work is performed under direct supervision of a higher level engineer according to established procedures and policies.  Does related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  (Illustrative only)

Operates surveying equipment to establish grades and lines, points and angles;

Takes notes pertaining to survey measurements;

Reads, reduces and plots field notes;

Drafts maps and engineering drawings using computer aided design software;

Performs entry level engineering computations;

Works with construction crews in interpreting engineering plans;

Compiles field tests of materials;

Assists in preparing cost estimates for projects by determining time schedules and materials needed;

Assists in right-of-ways acquisitions by contacting property owners,     gathering information for title, judgement and/or liens;

May on occasion perform semi-skilled tasks on public works maintenance or construction projects;

May perform simple clerical duties as required.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

 

Working knowledge of the modern principles, practices and instruments used in engineering drafting;

Working knowledge of mathematics through trigonometry and its application to

highway construction projects;

Working knowledge of the techniques and practices of surveying;

Skill in the use of modern surveying and drafting instruments and equipment;

Ability to organize and maintain accurate records and files;

Ability to perform close, detail work involving considerable visual effort and concentration;

Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs;

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:

 

(a)       Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate’s degree or higher in construction technology, mechanical technology or related field; or

 

 (b)      Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency

and two (2) years of experience assisting engineers in technical aspects

of structural design, drafting, surveying or inspecting highways, buildings or bridges; or

 

(c)        An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the

limits of (a) and (b).

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid New York State Class D driver's license.  Failure to maintain a NYS Class D driver's license will result in disciplinary action or dismissal.
