DISTINGUISHING REATURES OF THE
CLASS: The work
involves responsibility for performing a variety of non-professional tasks in a
school library such as aiding children in the use of library and computer room
facilities and maintaining order.
The duties of this class differ from clerical positions due to the
primary emphasis on dealing directly with students either individually or in
small groups. Additionally, the work
involves computer troubleshooting. The
work is performed under the general supervision of the School Librarian in
accordance with established policies and procedures. Supervision may be exercised over the work of
student helpers. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Assists
students and teachers in locating and using library and computer based materials and equipment, i.e., scanner, digital camera,
video camera;
Enforces
library rules to maintain student discipline;
Supervises
library in absence of Librarian;
Assists
with troubleshooting computer problems in the school;
May
supervise and assist students in the computer lab;
May read
stories and show filmstrips to classes;
May
supervise and train student helpers;
May
oversee cafeteria, playground or bus loading area to maintain order;
Issues,
renews and receives library materials;
Shelves
returned books, videos, magazines and other library materials;
Maintains
circulation records of library materials including interlibrary loan and BOCES
AV materials;
Issues
overdue notices;
Prepares
library materials for circulation;
Labels and
stamps library materials;
Performs
minor repairs to library materials and equipment;
Assists in
taking inventories
May issue
and collect audio-visual equipment;
May
keyboard correspondence and other reports not requiring the services of a
skilled typist;
May enter
or delete materials into circulation system;
May set up
the media retrieval system;
Assists
with troubleshooting computer problems in the school;
May change lamp bulbs in AV equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation
from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
