DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The work involves responsibility for performing skilled automotive
repair and maintenance. The incumbent is
also responsible for the safe and efficient operation of various types of motor
equipment. This class differs from that
of Motor Equipment Operator as the Motor Equipment Operator/Mechanic routinely
performs skilled automotive repairs which is not normally a work responsibility
of the Motor Equipment Operator. The
work is performed under the general supervision of the Head Mechanic. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Operates a dump truck to haul material such as gravel,
sand, dirt, and brush;
Operates a backhoe to dig holes and trenches;
Operates a sweeper to clean the streets;
Operates a loader to load trucks with materials such as
dirt, brush, and gravel;
Operates a sewer rodder to maintain sewers;
Operates a grader to grade dirt and plow snow;
Operates a roller to roll asphalt;
Operates a pick‑up truck to perform a variety of tasks such as
transporting materials, supplies, and equipment;
Repairs
or replaces parts such as brakes, water pumps, starters, oil pumps, wheel bearings, and alternators;
Works on large and small engines;
Installs exhaust systems on motor
equipment;
Installs and repairs all traffic signs;
Applies markings for all road striping,
directional traffic arrows and stop bars;
Applies and maintains markings for all
public parking areas;
Maintains all traffic signals in the
City;
Maintains event banners and decorative
for the City;
Responsible for emergency tree removal
during storms;
Prepares routine maintenance and repair
records;
May perform semi‑skilled welding
and/or cutting on equipment;
May perform semi‑skilled labor to assist in the routine
maintenance of small equipment;
May be involved in the City tree removal program;
May supervise subordinate employees.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the methods, tools,
terminology, and safety procedures of the automotive repair trade; good
knowledge of the operation and maintenance of trucks, loaders, backhoes,
graders, sewer rodder, and various other types of motor equipment; working
knowledge of the methods, tools, terminology, and safety procedures of welding
and cutting; skilled in performing automotive maintenance and repair; ability
to follow oral and written instructions; ability to prepare routine written
records and reports; ability to perform manual labor; manual dexterity;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Graduation from a NYS
registered or regionally accredited two‑year technical school or
community college with an associate's degree or certificate in automotive
technology or mechanics; OR
B. Graduation from a high
school technical or vocational program in automotive mechanics and one year of
experience in an automotive repair shop performing minor repair and maintenance
of automotive equipment under the supervision or direction of a lead/head
automotive mechanic; OR
C. Two years of experience
in an automotive repair shop performing minor repair and maintenance of
automotive equipment under the supervision or direction of a lead/head
automotive mechanic: OR
D. An equivalent combination
of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C).
NOTE: NYS Class B Commercial Driver's License with air brake
approval is required.
