MOTOR
EQUIPMENT OPERATOR - (LIGHT)
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE
CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the safe and
efficient operation of motor equipment. This class differs from that of Motor
Equipment Operator (Heavy) by the more frequent operation of lighter and/or
less complex equipment. An employee in
this class may also be required to perform unskilled labor on occasion. The work is performed under direct
supervision. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Operates a
dump truck to haul materials and equipment for street construction and repair;
Operates a
snow plow for snow removal;
Operates a
salt truck to spread road salt;
Operates a
pickup truck to transport equipment, materials, tools, and employees;
Operates a
tractor and attachments such as a snow plow, cement mixer, or lawn mower;
Serves as
a wingman on a snow plow;
Performs
minor repairs and preventive maintenance duties such as changing oil, replacing
bulbs, checking fluid levels, and greasing vehicles;
Shovels
and rakes asphalt to fill potholes;
Lays forms
for the construction or repair of sidewalks and curbs;
Performs masonry duties for the construction of or repair of catch basins, sidewalks, and curbs;
Operates
heavier, more complex equipment such as a backhoe, grader sweeper, or leader on
an emergency, relief or trainee basis;
Cuts and
cleans brush from streets, waterways, and other public areas;
May
install and repair traffic signs;
May apply
markings for road striping, directional traffic arrows and stop bars;
May apply
and maintain markings for public parking areas;
May
maintain traffic signals in the City;
May maintain
event banners and decorative for the City;
May be
responsible for emergency tree removal during storms;
May be involved in the City tree removal program.
May supervise Laborers on an occasional basis.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS:
Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of motor
equipment; skill in the safe and efficient operation of motor equipment;
ability to perform physical labor; ability to follow oral and written
directions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One year of experience in the operation of
construction and/or automotive equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air
brake endorsement required. Failure to
maintain a NYS Class B Commercial Driver’s License with the endorsement will
result in disciplinary action or dismissal.
