DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is a responsible law enforcement position involving responsibility
for the enforcement of laws, ordinances, and the protection of lives and
property in an assigned area during specified periods. The work involves
routine patrol tasks, assisting in investigations of criminal offenses and
apprehension of criminals. Work is
performed according to established policies and procedures and under the
general supervision of a Police Sergeant or other higher ranking officer with
considerable independent responsibility for the exercise of judgment in
emergency or other matters of a police natures. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES

Patrols an assigned area on foot or in a radio cruising car;
Responds in emergency situations to protect life and property;
Checks doors and windows of unoccupied businesses and residential
property;
Investigates
suspicious activities and makes arrests for violations of federal and state
laws and local ordinances;
Escorts prisoners to jail and to court and has them booked on charges;
Testifies in court or before a grand jury;
Watches for
and makes investigations of wanted and missing persons and stolen cars and
property;
Directs traffic and tickets cars for overtime parking;
Maintains order in crowds at parades and other public gatherings;
Answers questions for and directs the public;
Reports
serious defects in streets and in related matters requiring the attention of
public agencies;
Assists with criminal and plain clothes investigations as assigned;
Makes daily report of activities;
Complies with departmental regulations pertaining to uniforms,
firearms, and other police policies.
Provides
security of municipal buildings.
FULL
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of the New
York State Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Vehicle and Traffic Law and all
local ordinances and laws pertaining to police activities; good social and
general intelligence; good powers of observation; working knowledge of
first-aid methods; working knowledge of traffic direction and control methods;
ability to be courteous yet firm with the public; ability to operate an
automobile; sound judgment; skill in the use of firearms; physical strength and
agility; neatness of appearance; excellent moral character; excellent physical
condition.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high
school or possession of a high school equivalency or comparable diploma as
stated in Section 58 of the Civil Service Law.
Physical and agility requirements in accordance with the standards
established for Police Officer by the Municipal Police Training Council. A psychological test must also be completed.
SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS: Eligibility for a New York State Operator's license. Possession of license at time of
appointment.
