DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a
supervisory law enforcement position in charge of the overall operation and
activities of the police department.
Particular responsibility may be designated to the uniform division or
the criminal investigative unit. Work
is performed under the general direction of the Police Chief or Deputy Police
Chief and in accordance with established departmental rules and policies. Immediate supervision is exercised over the
work of Police Sergeants and general supervision over all subordinate
personnel. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative
only)
When assigned to the uniform division, supervises and coordinates shift
activities, records division, parking enforcement, school crossing guards,
animal control, training schools and/or seminars and special projects, and
insures maximum coverage for the delivery of police protection;
When assigned to the investigative unit, supervises and participates in all criminal
investigations and identification work which includes securing evidence,
questioning of prisoners and witnesses, fingerprinting, preparing evidence for
presentation to the courts, and testifying in court;
Assists superiors in planning and directing the activities of the
department;
Supervises, assigns and schedules work activities of
subordinates;
Instructs subordinates in methods and procedures, reviews work and evaluates performance;
Maintains personnel records, conducts internal background investigations, and prepares reports of activities;
May act as departmental liaison to outside
organizations.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS:
Thorough knowledge of police work, including a good knowledge of New
York penal Law, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Vehicle and Traffic Law;
particular knowledge of criminal law with particular reference to apprehension,
arrest, and prosecution of persons; skill in the use of firearms; ability to
supervise work of others; skill in making contacts with the public and outside
agencies; dependability; initiative and resourcefulness; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Two years of satisfactory experience as a Police
Sergeant.
