DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE
CLASS: This position
involves responsibility for planning and implementing projects in the areas of
community information and community relations for a school district. The work is performed under the general
supervision of a school district administrator with wide leeway allowed for the
use of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
· Implements the
school/community relations program.
Writes, edits and produces newsletters,
brochures, budget documents, calendars, bulletins and internal publications;
· Administers routing of above documents;
· Generates press releases, media packets and
promotions with realtors;
· Promotes special internal and external
events;
· Coordinates planning of year-round
communications program;
· Evaluates district public information
programs/materials and makes recommendations;
· Assesses current public information and
building communication materials;
· Consults with stakeholders and assesses their
various needs for information.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of
school public relations principles and methods; good knowledge of the methods
and procedures of producing, publishing and distributing community information
materials; ability to compile complex data for presentation to the public;
ability to prioritize news items for inclusion in district publications;
ability to establish and maintain good relations with school district
administration, staff, Board of Education members and the community; ability to
think and write creatively; ability to complete tasks within established
timelines; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
A.
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or
university with a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications,
public relations, marketing or a related field AND one (1) year of experience
in journalism, communications, public relations or marketing; OR
B.
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or
university with an associate’s degree in English, journalism, communications,
public relations, marketing or a related field and three (3) years of
experience as defined in (A); OR
C. Five (5)
years of experience as defined in (A).
