PUBLIC SAFETY ELECTRICIAN
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE
CLASS: This is skilled
electrical work involving the installation, maintenance and repair of municipal
fire alarm and traffic control systems. The work requires a knowledge of electrical circuitry principles particularly
as they apply to fire alarm and traffic control systems. Additionally, the
incumbent constructs and installs non-electric pedestrian and vehicular traffic
signs and paints pavement markings. The work is performed under the general
supervision of the Public Safety Superintendent. Does related
work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative
only)
Installs fire alarm equipment such as switchboards,
alarm boxes, gongs and sirens, recorders and transmitters;
Installs aerial wire and underground cable circuits and
reroutes or extends circuits to maintain continuous alarm protection;
Installs, maintains and repairs electric vehicular and
pedestrian traffic control devices;
Inspects and tests circuits to discover and repair
defects;
Tests and performs routine maintenance and repairs on
stand-by power system including generators and batteries;
Constructs and installs metal vehicular and pedestrian
traffic control signs;
Paints pavement marking to control vehicular and
pedestrian traffic;
Removes trees and limbs hazardous to the public safety;
Operates motor vehicle to transport workers and
equipment to job site;
May install and repair a variety of electrical devices
or equipment such as lights, outlets, pumps, fans and heaters.
FULL
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the installation, maintenance and
repair of fire alarm and traffic control systems;
Working knowledge of the New York State Vehicular and
Traffic Law as it pertains to regulating the installation and use of traffic
signs;
Working knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic
Control Devices;
Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and
wiring diagrams;
Willingness to work elevated above the ground;
Willingness to work long and irregular hours due to
emergency situations;
Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions;
Physical condition commensurate with
the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or possession of a high
school equivalency diploma and one year of experience in the installation or
repair of electrical devices utilizing both AC and DC circuitry.
NOTE:Vocational training as an
Electrician may be substituted for the experience requirement. Full-time
training will be treated as full-time experience. Part-time training will be
pro-rated. Education beyond the high school level in electrical technology or a
closely related field may be substituted for the experience requirement. Each
related course completed may be substituted for three months of experience.
