WORKS SUPERVISOR
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves supervising work crews engaged in the maintenance,
repair and construction of streets and sewers.
An incumbent of this position is responsible for planning and laying out
the work to be performed and ensuring that the work is performed in an
acceptable manner. General direction is
received from the Superintendent of Public Works with leeway granted as to the
order and methods in which jobs are performed.
An incumbent of this position may also be required to perform both
skilled and unskilled work related to public works activities when
necessary. Supervision is regularly
exercised over subordinate staff. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Plans and assigns work to
employees engaged in the maintenance, construction and repair of streets and
sewers;
Supervises and participates in
snow removal and the spreading of salt and sand on municipal streets;
Performs routine surveying work
such as operating a transit compass or level;
Reads and interprets engineering
plans and specifications and lays out work to be performed;
Prepares a variety of written
reports and records;
Confers with Superintendent of
Public Works regarding work assignments;
Reviews and evaluates the work
of employees by visual inspection;
Instructs employees in the safe
and efficient operation of motor equipment and in the proper methods of work
activities;
Participates in work activities
where a high degree of skill is required or in the event of an emergency or
shortage of workers.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the methods, tools, terminology, and safety procedures used in the construction, maintenance, or repair of streets, sidewalks, and sewers;
Good knowledge of the safe and
efficient operation of motor equipment;
Working knowledge of the
methods, instruments, and terminology of surveying work;
Skill in the operation of motor
equipment;
Ability to plan and supervise
the work of others;
Ability to prepare written
records and reports;
Ability to follow oral and
written instructions;
Physical condition commensurate
with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Three years of experience in general public
works activities which includes construction, maintenance and repair of streets
or sewers or public sanitarian.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Class B Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement
required. Failure to maintain a NYS
Class B Commercial Driver's License with endorsement will result in disciplinary
action or dismissal.
