DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for teaching or conducting a specialized recreational activity (e.g., arts and crafts, drama, music, lifetime sports, etc.).  The incumbent instructs groups or individuals to develop skill in specific activities.  In addition, a Recreation Specialist may plan, organize, and conduct special events for activity groups.  The work is performed under general supervision with con­siderable latitude permitted as to method of instructing or conducting the specialized activity.  A significant portion of the work may be performed on evenings and weekends.,  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  (Illustrative only)

Plans, organizes, and conducts instructional programs in specialty activities such as arts and crafts, drama, sports, music and dance:

Officiates at sporting events;

Organizes and conducts league or tournament games;

Assists in the planning of special events;

Produces and directs stage performances;

Organizes and conducts rehearsals;

Requisitions and controls distribution of supplies and equipment;

Prepares written records and reports.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Thorough knowledge of the specialty skills; good knowledge of the methods of group organization and instruction as applied to the specialty activity; ability to develop a good working relationship with groups and individuals; ability to stimulate and maintain the interest of participants; ability to prepared written records and reports; willingness to work evenings and week­ends; physical condition commensurate with the demands of this position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:      Either:

            (a) Completion of a formal course of instruction in the specialty field;

                                                                                            or

            (b) Six months of experience in instruction or conduction specialized activity;

                                                                                           or

            (c) One year of hobbyist experience in the specialty field;

                                                                                            or

            (d) An equivalent combination of training and experience.
