DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for
teaching or conducting a specialized recreational activity (e.g., arts and
crafts, drama, music, lifetime sports, etc.).
The incumbent instructs groups or individuals to develop skill in
specific activities. In addition, a
Recreation Specialist may plan, organize, and conduct special events for
activity groups. The work is performed
under general supervision with considerable latitude permitted as to method of
instructing or conducting the specialized activity. A significant portion of the work may be
performed on evenings and weekends.,
Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Plans,
organizes, and conducts instructional programs in specialty activities such as
arts and crafts, drama, sports, music and dance:
Officiates at
sporting events;
Organizes and
conducts league or tournament games;
Assists in the
planning of special events;
Produces and
directs stage performances;
Organizes and
conducts rehearsals;
Requisitions
and controls distribution of supplies and equipment;
Prepares
written records and reports.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Thorough
knowledge of the specialty skills; good knowledge of the methods of group
organization and instruction as applied to the specialty activity; ability to
develop a good working relationship with groups and individuals; ability to
stimulate and maintain the interest of participants; ability to prepared
written records and reports; willingness to work evenings and weekends;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of this position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Either:
(a) Completion of a formal course of
instruction in the specialty field;
or
(b) Six months of experience in
instruction or conduction specialized activity;
or
(c) One year of hobbyist experience
in the specialty field;
or
(d) An equivalent combination of
training and experience.
