DISTINGUISHED FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The
position involves the performance of semi-skilled work in the maintenance of
park areas and recreation facilities including playgrounds, swimming pools,
skating rinks, picnic areas and athletic fields. Additionally, an employee will be responsible to perform
custodial activities in assigned areas.
The incumbent may be required to operate motor equipment and power
tools. The work is performed under the
general supervision of the Recreation Maintenance Supervisor. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Lays out,
marks, and maintains athletic fields such as softball diamonds and football
fields;
Performs
custodial work such as sweeping floors, cleaning bathroom facilities, emptying
trash baskets, and stocking paper
supplies in recreational buildings;
Performs
routine grounds keeping work such as mowing lawns, planting grass, trimming
shrubs, and disposing of garbage;
Performs
basic carpentry, plumbing and electrical work to repair, build, or maintain
recreational buildings and equipment;
Installs
recreational equipment such as portable bleachers, backstops, fences, and
playground equipment;
Floods and
maintains outdoor ice rinks;
Performs
routine maintenance work such as scrubbing pool walls, hosing down decks, and
installing rafts at a swimming pool or beach;
Paints
recreational buildings and equipment such as bathhouses, playground equipment,
picnic tables, and benches;
Builds
recreational equipment such as ping pong tables, picnic tables, and benches;
Removes
snow from parking lots, ice rinks, and sidewalks by means of tractor plow and
snow shovel;
Transports,
assembles, and maintains a portable stage equipped with a basic sound system;
Purchases
equipment and supplies as directed;
May
oversee the work of seasonal employees engaged in routine manual labor.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS:
Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tool and terminology used in the maintenance and repair of recreational buildings, grounds, and equipment; skill in the operation of motor equipment and power tools; ability to perform recreational maintenance work; ability to follow oral and written instructions, manual dexterity; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One year of experience
involving the maintenance of recreational fields, equipment, buildings,
grounds, and basic carpentry, plumbing and/or electrical work.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a New York
State Class D driver's license is required.
Failure to maintain a NYS Class D license will result in disciplinary
action or dismissal.
