SANITARY
LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This class involves the performance of
technical laboratory work involving the physical, chemical, bacteriological or
microscopic examination of raw and treated water, wastewater, and sludge. The work is performed in accordance with
prescribed procedures requiring a high degree of accuracy. Error may result in endangering the physical
health of the community. Direct
supervision is received from a Sanitary Chemist. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Performs test
as directed by Sanitary Chemist;
Collects samples for analysis of plant influent, effluent
sludge and other by‑products;
Performs wet chemical analysis of plant influent,
partially treated waste water, sludge, effluent, and other by‑products;
Maintains test
result record and prepares data sheets;
Cleans,
maintains and stores laboratory supplies;
Maintains
inventory and orders supplies;
Prepares
chemical and bacteriological media and test solutions;
Assembles
instruments and equipment for analytical or research work;
May perform
tests in absence of Sanitary Chemist;
Participates in
training plant personnel;
Attends
laboratory related courses and seminars.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge
of modern laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, and safety precautions
used in the analysis of water, wastewater, and sludge; working knowledge of the
principles of environmental health as they relate to wastewater treatment;
skill in the operation and care of laboratory equipment and apparatus and use
and storage of chemicals; ability to understand and follow technical oral and
written directions; ability to maintain records and reports; thoroughness;
accuracy; dexterity; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
A. Graduation
from a NYS registered or regionally accredited two year college with an Associate's Degree in
chemistry, biology, laboratory technology, or a related field; OR
B. Graduation
from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two
years of experience in performing physical, chemical or bacteriological tests
in a public health laboratory or performing physical, chemical or
bacteriological tests involving water or wastewater analysis; OR
C. An equivalent
combination of training and experience as described above.
