          SEWER/HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  The work involves responsibility for assisting in the construction, repair, and maintenance of the storm and sanitary sewer system of the City.  The incumbent also performs unskilled labor and operates heavy equipment to assist in the general work of the department.  The work is performed under the direct supervision of a Public Works Supervisor.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

 

Removes obstructions from sewer lines and catch basins;

Cleans sewer lines and catch basins to improve flow and prevent blockage;

Checks ejector stations and pumping stations daily to insure proper operation;

Maintains ejector and pumping stations by checking the oil, changing fan belts,

       replacing motors, removing grease build‑up, and clearing obstructions from

       the pump propeller;

Checks sewer lines daily to insure proper operation;

Assists in the construction and repair of sewer lines, manholes and catch

       basins;

Flushes sewer lines as needed to improve drainage;

Informs utility companies, contractors, and private individuals as to the loca‑

       tion of sewer laterals to allow for connection to the system or to avoid

       damage from digging;

Inspects newly installed sewer lines for proper installation upon request for

       the plumbing inspector;

Performs physical labor such as patching streets, painting, and pouring cement;

Operates motor equipment such as salt truck and dump truck to assist in street

       maintenance, construction and repair;

Operates a sewer truck with related attachments such as a rodder and vacuum hose

       to assist in the maintenance and repair of the sewer system;

May attend training workshops for pump stations.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of the methods, tools, and terminology of sewer system construction, maintenance and repair; skill in the safe and efficient operation of motor equipment; ability and willingness to perform physical labor; ability to follow oral and written directions; dexterity; willingness to work in inclement weather; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma AND one (1) year of experience in the operation of construction

and/or automotive equipment.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for

the type of heavy equipment vehicles to be operated at the time

of appointment.
