DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is moderately difficult clerical work
involving responsibility for the performance of a variety of clerical tasks
involving the full-time or substantial part-time operation of a word processor,
computer with word processing software, or a typewriter. The work may require a genera understanding
of specific law, and organizational rules, procedures, and policies. The work is performed under general
supervision in accordance with established routines. Supervision may be exercised over the work of subordinate
clerical employees. This class differs
from that of Keyboard Specialist by the greater complexity of tasks of the
supervisory responsibilities. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Types
correspondence, memoranda, and statements from copy, rough draft or oral
presentations;
Types,
processes, reviews, and files requisitions, vouches, time sheets, bills, and
receipts;
Types,
issues, and maintains a record of applications, permits, and licenses;
Maintains personnel records and prepares payroll
adjustments;
Types,
processes, reviews, and files a variety of control and operational records and
reports;
Compiles, types, and distributes statistical records and
reports;
Answers the telephone to arrange appointments or to
answer routine questions;
Operates office machines such as addressograph,
mimeograph, and calculators;
Cuts and proofreads stencils;
Maintains
a record or ledger of salaries, purchases, and contractual expenditures;
May assign and review the work performed by subordinate
clerical employees;
May instruct employees in the specialized clerical work
of the organization.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of office terminology, procedures, and
equipment; good knowledge of Business Arithmetic and English; skill in the operation
of office equipment; ability to type accurately at an acceptable rate of speed;
ability to prepare and maintain a variety of written records and reports;
ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to communicate
effectively with others; clerical aptitude; accuracy; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
A. Graduation
from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma including
or supplemented by a course in typing, keyboarding, word processing, or
business computer skills, and one (1) year of clerical experience which shall
have involved use of an alpha-numeric keyboard; OR
B. Two
(2) years of clerical experience involving typing or the operation of word processor
or computer with QWERTY keyboard; OR
C. An
equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated in (A) and (B)
above.
