SUPERINTENDENT
OF BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS
GENERAL
STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Has responsible charge of
buildings and grounds operation, cleaning, and maintenance activities; does
related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is an important supervisory position
involving responsibility for the efficient and economical operation and
maintenance of school buildings and grounds.
This class differs from that of Head Custodian in that the scope of the
duties performed and the size of the system maintained require greater
managerial ability. Work is performed in
accordance with general policy outlined by the Supervising Principal or Board
of Education allowing wide leeway for use of independent judgment. Immediate supervision is exercised over the
work of custodial, maintenance and groundskeeping personnel.
TYPICAL
WORK ACTIVITIES:

Assigns
employees to various cleaning and maintenance tasks and establishes schedules
of work;
Inspects
and supervises painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical and other mechanical
maintenance and construction work performed by custodial or maintenance
employees or private contractors;
Performs
and supervises the more difficult maintenance and repair work for machinery and
equipment;
Prepares
tentative budget estimates for buildings and grounds activities;
Oversees
the maintenance and upkeep of the school grounds;
Keeps
records and prepares reports on buildings and grounds maintenance;
Meets
with salesmen and orders parts and supplies for custodial maintenance
activities;
Interviews
prospective new employees and recommends the hiring of temporary and permanent
employees;
Receives
and attempts to settle grievances and personnel problems of subordinate
employees;
Maintains
employee time records.
FULL
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Thorough knowledge of modern large scale buildings and grounds operation and maintenance practices; good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heating and ventilating equipment; good knowledge of the tools, terminology, and practices of one or more of the mechanical or building trades; ability to inspect the work of building tradesmen; ability to plan and supervise building and grounds maintenance activities; mechanical aptitude, dependability; initiative; good physical condition.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from a standard
senior high school and four years of satisfactory experience in building
maintenance activities; or any equivalent combination of training and
experience sufficient to indicate ability to do the work.
