DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: 

            This is responsible part‑time work calling for the exercise of considerable vigilance in directing traffic and assisting children going to and from school in safely crossing streets.  Work is performed according to an established routine with some leeway for the use of independent judgment in emergency situations.  Supervision is received from a Police Officer through inspection and reports.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  (Illustrative only)

 

Stops traffic and guides children safely across streets;

Instructs children concerning proper places for crossing streets and precau­tions that are to be observed;

Assists children with minor problems encountered going to and from school;

May direct traffic at assigned post during school crossing hours.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good general intelligence;

Ability to deal firmly yet courteously with the public;

Ability to get along well with children;

Familiarity with first‑aid methods;

Good powers of observation;

Willingness to work under adverse weath­er conditions;

Dependability;

Good physical condition.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Completion of a standard grade school course; or any equivalent combination of training and experience of which indicates suffi­cient maturity to do the work.
