SENIOR MOTOR
VEHICLE CLERK
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The work involves responsibility for assisting in the operation of the Motor Vehicle Bureau and for maintaining the financial records for all transactions in the bureau. The incumbent oversees the activities of the Motor Vehicle Bureau in the absence of the Motor Vehicle Director. Duties require the auditing of all monetary functions of the bureau and demand a thorough understanding of all phases of bureau operation. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Motor Vehicle Director with considerable leeway allowed for the use of independent judgement in carrying out the details of the work. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative

Reviews and processes license applications,
issues license plates and registrations;
Oversees the activities of employees engaged
in processing license applications, issuing license plates and registrations;
Makes suggestions on improving methods and procedures and assists in their installation;
Responsible for inventory control, including preparing requisitions, ordering, receiving and maintaining appropriate supply of materials necessary;
Trains
new employees;
Prepares
periodic financial reports on activities of the bureau;
Assists applicants in the proper completion of forms and answers requests for information;
Performs all duties required of a Motor Vehicle Clerk;
Performs duties of Director of Motor Vehicles, in his/her absence.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of pertinent sections of the
Vehicle and Traffic Law as they relate to the issuance of licenses and registrations;
Good knowledge of modern methods used in keeping and checking financial accounts and records, including financial computer software;
Good knowledge
of modern office terminology, procedures, equipment and business English;
Ability to operate a personal computer and
utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheets
and databases;
Ability
to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;

Ability to perform close, detail work involving considerable visual effort and concentration;
Ability
to deal effectively with the public;
Physical condition commensurate with
the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Either:
(a)
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or
university or one accredited
by
the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate’s degree
or higher; or
(b) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of account keeping, business or clerical experience; or
(c) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
