DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The work involves responsibility for diagnosing, evaluating and treating
the speech, language, voice and feeding disorders of children aged birth to
five years. General supervision is
received from a higher level administrator with leeway permitted for exercising
independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Provides treatment of speech
(articulation, fluency, voice); language (Phonology, morphology, syntax,
semantics and pragmatics); and oral and pharyngeal related function disorders
(disorders relating to swallowing and feeding);
Evaluates a client's cognitive and
social aspects of communication including challenging behavior, ineffective
social skills, and/or lack of communication opportunities;
Develops and implements appropriate
treatment plans, dispenses corrective devices or systems, and maintains
treatment outcomes;
Performs ongoing assessment to
evaluate the effectiveness of practices and modifies services accordingly;
Prepares written reports including
diagnosis of speech and language disorders, progress reports and discharge
summaries;
Attends inter-disciplinary meetings
and coordinates service plans with other case providers;
Participates in community outreach,
education activities and conducts in-service training to increase public
awareness of speech and language issues, treatment options and prevention;
Assists in developing and
coordinating case related in-service training;
Participates in regional and local
professional meetings and conferences to keep abreast of and coordinate health
care developments and services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Licensure and current registration to practice as a Licensed
Speech-Language Pathologist and certificate of Teacher of the Speech and
Hearing-Impaired in accordance with §159 of the NYS Education Law AND
experience in speech language pathology, involving work with children ages
birth to five years of age.
