STENOGRAPHER
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is routine work involving responsibility for the performance of a
variety of clerical tasks including th4e full-time typing and stenography. The work is performed according to defined
procedures with detailed instructions provided for new or unusual assignments
The work is performed under direct supervision. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Takes and transcribes dictation
of letters, memoranda, reports and other materials;
Types materials from copy, rough
draft, dictating machine, cylinders and other detailed instructions;
Types payrolls, vouchers, bills,
forms, title searches, judgments, stencils, bulletins, applications and other
materials;
Files correspondence, reports,
records, forms and other materials;
Collects fees and accounts for
monies received;
Makes entries on control cards
or in ledger from original sources;
Makes arithmetical computations,
compiles and types simple statistical reports;
Maintains inventories of
supplies and equipment;
Operates mimeograph, photostat,
computing and other office machines;
Answers telephone, providing
information to callers, taking messages and making appointments.
May act as a Secretary to an
official where assignments are limited in scope;
May prepare duplicating mats,
masters or stencils;
May relieve telephone switchboard
operators.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS:
Working knowledge of office
terminology, procedures and equipment;
Working knowledge of business
arithmetic and English;
Skill in taking and transcribing
dictation at an acceptable rate of speed;
Skill in typing at an acceptable
rate of speed;
Ability to understand and follow
oral and written instructions;

clerical aptitude; good judgment; tact; courtesy; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
a)
Graduation
from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, including
or supplemented by courses in stenography and typing; or
b)
One
year of clerical experience which includes typing and the taking and
transcribing of dictation; or
c)
An
equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits fo
(a) and (b) above.
