TOWN/VILLAGE HIGHWAY SUPERINTENDENT
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is a Department Head position responsible for planning, coordinating,
overseeing, and directing the activities of the Town or Village Highway
Department. The work also involves maintaining
all aspects of the finances of the department (eg.‑paying bills,
bookkeeping). Direct supervision is
exercised over all department personnel.
Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Supervises, oversees, and directs all Town/Village road construction and
maintenance projects;
Evaluates the condition of Town/Village roads and prioritizes
construction and maintenance work;
Establishes quality control standards and reviews activities for
compliance with these standards;
Supervises, oversees, and directs
Town/Village snow removal;
Monitors revenues and expenditures;
Prepares and maintains a variety of
records and reports;
Monitors emergency situations and their impact on road and traffic conditions, and coordinates efforts to manage such situations.

Comprehensive knowledge of modern methods, materials, and techniques of road construction and maintenance; ability to supervise and direct subordinate personnel; ability to analyze construction and maintenance programs and techniques for effectiveness; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; initiative; resourcefulness; integrity; sound professional judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a high school diploma or
equivalency diploma; and
Possession of valid NYS Class 3 drivers
license.
