  TOWN/VILLAGE HIGHWAY SUPERINTENDENT

 

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a Department Head position responsible for planning, coordinating, overseeing, and directing the activi­ties of the Town or Village Highway Department.  The work also involves main­taining all aspects of the finances of the department (eg.‑paying bills, bookkeeping).  Direct supervision is exercised over all department personnel.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  (Illustrative only)

Supervises, oversees, and directs all Town/Village road construction and maintenance projects;

Evaluates the condition of Town/Village roads and prioritizes construction and maintenance work;

Establishes quality control standards and reviews activities for compliance with these standards;

Supervises, oversees, and directs Town/Village snow removal;

Monitors revenues and expenditures;

Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports;

Monitors emergency situations and their impact on road and traffic condi­tions, and coordinates efforts to manage such situations.

Comprehensive knowledge of modern methods, materials, and techniques of road construction and maintenance; ability to supervise and direct subordinate personnel; ability to analyze construction and maintenance programs and techniques for effectiveness; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working rela­tionships; initiative; resourcefulness; integrity; sound professional judg­ment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency diploma; and

 

Possession of valid NYS Class 3 drivers license.
