DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a part‑time competitive position
involving responsibility for planning, developing, implementing, and
coordinating volunteer firefighter maintenance of records related to the
volunteer incentives and retirement programs.
The work is performed under the general supervision of the Fire Chief in
accordance with established program
objectives. Does related work as
required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Assists the Fire Chief with projects which are intended to improve the
effectiveness of the volunteer contingent;
Maintains records and prepares
reports on volunteer activities;
Plans and coordinates volunteer
recruitment and retention activities;
Develops and executes publicity programs to inform prospective
volunteer members;
Helps to create processes for recruitment and screening or volunteer
fire company applicants;
Establishes liaison with volunteer companies and appropriate
organizations on a continuing basis;
Prepares news releases
pertaining to volunteers;
Participates in meetings and conferences designed to improve support for
and retention of volunteers;
Speaks before public, private, and employer groups for the purpose of
soliciting support for volunteer services.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES,
SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the
organization, operation, and activities of volunteer firefighters in a combination
fire department; good knowledge of activities in the field of promotion and
advertising; good knowledge of recruitment and retention initiatives for
volunteers; working knowledge of techniques of interviewing and placement;
skill in operation of a personal computer; ability to prepare and deliver
interesting oral and written presentations using various media formats; ability
to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability
to plan and initiate programs to insure recruitment and retention of volunteer
firefighter; ability to type at an acceptable rate of speed; initiative; tack;
courtesy; good judgment; emotional maturity; willing to work flexible schedule
including evenings and weekends; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Graduation from a
regionally accredited or NYS registered two year college with an Associate's
Degree in Labor or Employee Relations, Human Services, Psychology, Sociology,
Education, or a closely related field and one year of experience in an
organized volunteer services program or working with adults in a service‑oriented
community organization; OR
B. Graduation from high school
or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma and five years of experience as specified in (A); OR
C. An equivalent combination of
training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
NOTE: Verifiable part‑time and/or volunteer experience may be
credited toward the experiential requirement of a prorate basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a valid,
appropriate level NYS driver's license at the time of appointment and
maintenance of said license for the duration of employment.
