DISTINGUISING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is an
important professional position involving responsibility for rendering legal
counsel to Village officials and the Village Board, and representing the
Village in civil litigation. The work is performed under the direction of the
Village Board.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
(Illustrative only):
Investigates the law and renders legal opinions to village
officials;
Prepares resolutions, contracts, pleadings, appeals,
documents and other legal papers;
Appears in court to represent the village in civil matters;
Attends all village board meetings and advises the board on
legal problems.
FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Thorough knowledge of New York State law as is applies to villages; skill in the presentation of legal arguments in a court of law; ability to render legal opinions in understandable form, by spoken or written word; high standard of professional conduct; courtesy and tact; integrity; resourcefulness; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a recognized law school and three years of
experience in the practice of law, AND possession of a license to practice law
