WATER METER SERVICER/BACKFLOW CORDINATOR

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

This is routine work involving responsibility for reading meters at both private residences and business establishments and accurately recording readings of water usage.  The work also involves installing, testing and repairing residential and commercial meters. The work is performed under general supervision according to a prescribed procedure.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  (Illustrative only)

Reads and records readings of domestic and commercial water meters;

Checks for water leaks and other service problems in residences;

Repairs simple or urgent meter malfunctions and problems at time of reading and     makes notes of other malfunctions and problems for repair at a later time;

Removes defective meters for repair or replacement;

Inspects meter and backflow hookups;

Installs, repairs and tests water meters;

Tests and records result for various departments;

Turns on and shuts off water service for customers;

Turns off water service for customers who fail to pay bills;

Submits meter reading records to clerical staff for billing;

Performs a variety of maintenance duties as required.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Working knowledge of the mechanics and hydraulics of water meter operation; working knowledge of tools and techniques of water meter installation, removal, maintenance and repair; ability to record figures accurately and to prepare legible written records; ability to make simple arithmetic calculations; mechanical aptitude; courtesy and tact in dealing with the public; honesty; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a NYS high school equivalency diploma.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

            1.      Candidate must possess a valid NYS Driver's License at time of appointment.

 

            2.      Candidate must possess a valid NYS Backflow Tester Certificate at time of appointment.
