WATER AND WASTEWATER MAINTENANCE WORKER

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

This is manual work of ordinary difficulty involving responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the village sewer collection system, which includes a sewer pump station and lift stations.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  (Illustrative only)

Cleans and maintains the village sewer and drainage system;

Checks machinery and equipment to insure efficient operation of pumps;

Makes minor repairs or oversees the servicing and minor repair of pumping station equipment;

Enforces village sewer ordinances;

Operates, maintains and repairs water chlorination system;

Cleans and tightens electrical contacts;

Monitors water in the tanks and wells;

Inspects new sewer connections;

Checks sewer lines and manholes as needed;

Takes and records meter readings and sewer/water systems;

Installs, repairs and reads water meters;

Keeps records and makes reports of the operation of pump station facilities;

Maintains inventory of and purchases parts and supplies necessary for the operation of the             department.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of the standard practices, terminology and tools of sewer installation and maintenance;

Knowledge of village sewer ordinances;

Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of pumping equipment;

Ability to make minor repairs to mechanical equipment;

Ability to keep records and make reports;

Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions;

Thoroughness and good judgment;

Resourcefulness;

Physical condition must commensurate with the demands of the position;

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1.      Graduation from high school; and

2.      Two (2) years of work experience in water operation systems;

3.      Possession of a Grade II “B” certificate; and

4.      Possession of a Grade “D” Distribution System License within one (1) year of appointment.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid NYS Class B Driver’s License with air brake.  Failure to maintain a NYS Class B Driver’s License with all required endorsements will result in disciplinary action or dismissal.
