DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for planning
and supervising the installation, maintenance and repair of water mains,
services, hydrants and valves. This
class of positions differs from that of Water Distribution Maintenance Worker
in that it involves responsibility for procedural planning and supervising the
work of subordinate employees. Work is
performed under the general supervision of the Chief Water Systems Operator and
the Director of Finance and Administration with considerable leeway for the use
of independent judgment in planning and supervising daily activities. Supervision is exercised over Water
Treatment Plant Operators/ Trainees, Water Distribution Maintenance Workers,
and Laborers. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL
WORK ACTIVITIES:

Supervises
the installation, maintenance, replacement and repair of water mains, services,
valves and fire hydrants;
Plans,
assigns, and inspects work of subordinates on a daily basis;
Supervises
the tapping of water mains and the installation, maintenance, replacement and
repair of services to customers;
Supervises
and participates in the location and repair of leaks in water mains and
services;
Supervises
the installation, maintenance, repair and annual draining of fire hydrants;
Inspect
maps and measures all new water mains and services;
Locates
water mains and services using maps and electronic sensing devices;
Consults
with the Chief Water Systems Operator/Director of Finance and Administration
regarding unusual or emergency situations;
Makes recommendations regarding the replacement of water mains the extension of the water distribution system;
Has
responsibility for traffic control and employee safety at work site;
Supervises
the maintenance of department buildings and equipment used in the maintenance
used in the of the water distribution system;
Maintains
time and work records;
Responds
to emergency repair calls.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABIILTIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough
knowledge of the practices, tools, and equipment used in the installation,
maintenance and repair of water mains, services, hydrants and valves; good
knowledge of the principles of hydraulics as they relate to water distribution
systems; ability to read and work from plans and sketches; ability to plan and
supervise the work of others; ability to understand and carry out oral and
written directions; ability to maintain simple records; mechanical aptitude;
willingness to be on call and respond to emergency situations; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One year of
operating and maintenance experience in a water distribution system.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession
of a Grade D Water Distribution System Operator Certificate.
