WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR (TYPE B PLANT)
DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The
work involves responsibility of assisting in the actual operation of a Water
Treatment Plant at a community water system.
Water Treatment Plant Operators must possess the required Grade II-B
Water Treatment Plant Operator's License and a Grade "D" Distribution
System License in accordance with the provisions of the Sanitary Code. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL
WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Operates
pumps, valves, motors, and related machinery and equipment;
Performs
maintenance work and makes minor repairs to machinery and equipment;
Records
readings of meters, gauges and scales;
Takes
samples of water for testing;
Makes
necessary tests for control of plant operation;
Operates
backhoes, dump trucks, lawn mowers and other related machinery and equipment;
Assists
in the instruction of trainees;
Keeps
a log of work related operations;
Performs
custodial duties in connection with maintenance of buildings and grounds;
May read and record domestic
and commercial water meters;
May install, repair and
inspect water meters;
May
install, test, and repair back flow devices.
FULL
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good
knowledge of the practices used and the equipment required in the operation and
maintenance of the assigned Water Treatment Plant, including the Water
Distribution System; working knowledge of the principles and applications of
physics, chemistry and bacteriology as they relate to water purification and
distribution, skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves, back flow
devices and related mechanical, electrical and heavy equipment, ability to make
routine laboratory and field tests for control of plant operation; ability to
read, understand and record data from gauges, scales and meters; ability to
understand and carry out oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude;
alertness and dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands
of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS:
A.
Graduation
from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and
successful completion of an appropriate level Water Treatment Operator course;
and
B.
One
year operating experience at a Water Treatment Plant; and
C.
Possession
of a Grade II-B certificate; and
D.
Grade
"D" Distribution System License.
SPECIAL
REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a CDL Class C License at time of appointment and retain it.
SPECIAL NOTE: Possession
of a valid NYS back flow certification is required for an employee to be
assigned to the permissive duties related to back flow devices.
