WATER AND WASTEWATER MAINTENANCE WORKER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: 

This is important technical work involving responsibility for the maintenance and repair of the Village of Marathon’s Water and Wastewater Treatment facilities, distribution system, sewer lines, lift stations, and related equipment.  The work also involves the performance of a variety of semi-skilled tasks in connection with the construction, maintenance and repair of water and wastewater mains, services and hydrants.  Work is performed under general supervision of the Superintendent of Water/Sewer.  Due to nature of the work, the incumbent may be required to be on call weekends, holidays and evenings.  Does related work as required. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:     (Illustrative only)

Maintains, repairs, and installs water mains, valves and hydrants;

Maintains repairs, and installs sewer lines;

Collects water and wastewater samples;

Repairs water meters;

Installs and repairs fire hydrants;

Reads water meters;

Operates backhoe, air compressor, jackhammer and lawn mower;

Records readings of gauges, meters, scales, regulates and adjusts pumps, valves, and related equipment;

Participates in complete building and groundkeeping at the Water and Wastewater treatment facilities-such as mowing grass, painting, general repairs and minor construction;

Reports to Superintendent of Water/Sewer regarding unusual or emergency situations. 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: 

 

Some knowledge of the practices, tools and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of water mains, services, hydrants and valves; some knowledge of the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of equipment found in a wastewater treatment plant; some knowledge of the principles of hydraulics as they relate to water and wastewater distribution systems; ability to read work from plans and sketches; ability to understand and carryout oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; willingness to be on call and respond to emergency situations; work weekend shift duty when required; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A.                 Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and possession of a Grade C Water System Operator certificate and Grade 3A Wastewater Treatment Operator certificate within one (1) year of employment.
